Big Ol'Boys and their Music

Music is important to the Big Ol'Boys, for playing in the car, on the hi fi or preferably the Jukebox. On this page you will find our currently listening favourites, latest finds, Jukeboxes, Live Bands and any other music related topics. Our choices cover any period or style, although are predominately from 50's thru to the 70's.

The best way to listen to old 45s or 78s is on a Jukebox

. We recommend that if you want to buy any of the items listed below and you want the CD version that you use:

The Big Ol'Boys album of the month is the 1960 Album from Billy Fury : The Sound of Fury

Possibly the greatest Rock'n'Roll record ever produced in the UK. All songs were written by Billy, at a time when only the likes of Buddy Holly were successfully recording their own compositions. The musicians were put together to re-create the early Elvis sound. Joe Brown plays lead guitar a la Scotty Moore. The album works as a whole, the 10 songs represent the strongest group of UK songs, easily comparable with the best from the U.S.A

Mr. D's recommended track : Turn My Back On You

Whilst we love vinyl (and Shellac!) we know that not everyone can easily get hold of it. With the vast back catalogues available on CD, this is the best way to hear music that in many cases is impossible to find on vinyl. We would recommend the following CDs as tried and tested winners currently playing in our cars.

These are our retro recommendation, old sounds from new bands

Big Sandy and His Fly-Ryte Boys

Somewhere between Bob Wills and early Rockabilly is Big Sandy. He has been making his own version of "Hillbilly Bop" since the mid nineties. This is his latest recording

The Ray Gelato Giants: The Men From Uncle

Ray pumps out the modern equivalent of Louis Prima. In our opinion this is his best todate. Angelina, Tu Vuo'Fa L'Americano and The Men from Uncle are our particular favourites.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

The big swing revival band. This album was/is a milestone album for the swing revival movement. The whole album just works. Mr. Pinstripe Suit, You and Me and the Bottle makes Three are two of the best tracks.

Status Quo - Hello

This is classic Quo, the album that set them up for 30 years. This is when they were serious about their music. Listen to Roll Over Lay Down, 4500 times and Blue Eyed Lady. These are tracks that are worthy of a fresh listen.

Louis Jordan: Best of

There is no one more important in the jump blues field. In the mid forties Louis Jordan was the king. Pumping rhythm and wailing sax are his trademark, along with humorous lyrics. Saturday Nite Fish Fry, Caledonia, Let the Good Times Roll are timeless classics. Louis Jordan is a clear conduit from Swing to Rock'n'Roll and deserves your serious respect
